Multilingual Support in Linux

Being a semi-fluent francophone myself, I have decided to use Ubuntu in French.

So far, most GNOME applications and other applications installed by default (Firefox) are quite good with the translations.

Here are some screenshots:

Linux 2.6.20-11-generic
GNOME 2.18
Compiz 0.3.6
Banshee 0.12

What is that desktop/background you have on the screenshots and where can I get it?

It is an image I found on gnome-look.org. It’s fairly popular. Tux getting an Xray.
